How to Remove Powered by Shopify from Your Store’s Footer [Full Guide]
Looking to clean up your Shopify store footer and remove that “Powered by Shopify” text? You’re not alone. Many store owners prefer a more customized look and put their own brand there. The good news is, it’s totally possible to remove it yourself without needing any special coding skills. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll walk you through how to remove Powered by Shopify from your online store’s footer with and without touching the code.
How to remove Powered by Shopify by editing the code?
For those comfortable with a little customization, you can remove the “Powered by Shopify” text from your online store by editing your store’s theme code. This method will require a bit of coding knowledge, so if you have any doubts you might not be able to do that, you can always contact Shopify support or simply reach out to us and we’d be happy to do it for you.
We put together a video tutorial, so if you’re more of a visual person, watch the process in the video while editing your shop theme.
Here’s the step-by-step guide on how to remove Powered by Shopify from your store by editing the code:
Step 1: Log into your Shopify admin area.
Step 2: Go to Themes from the navigation to open your Theme Library where your current Shopify store theme is included. (You can work directly on the live theme, however, in case something breaks, we suggest you work on a duplicate instead. )
Step 3: To do so, click the dotted More menu next to your live theme and choose Duplicate. This will create an exact copy of your theme and it will act as a safe zone where you can experiment with some updates. Of course, if you’re happy with the results, you can then publish that theme.
Step 4: It’s best to be able to see what any changes you make will look like. This is why you would want to keep a Preview tab open at all times while editing the code. To do so, go to the Copy of your theme and click the dotted More menu where you will hit the Preview option. This will open the Preview time for you to access any time you need to.
Step 5: Now, go to the Copy of your theme and click the dotted More menu. Choose Edit Code to open the theme editor.
Step 6: The Powered by Shopify message is usually located in footer.liquid
. You can find it easily if you type ” footer” in the search bar on the left sidebar of the Shopify editor.
This screenshot shows what it should look like:
Step 7: Next, in the code editor, search for the text called ” powered_by” to find the string. It’s best to remove the entire element.
Step 8: Once you delete the line, click Save in the top right corner of the code editor and go to your Preview tab. Refresh the page to see the changes you made.
If done correctly, the ” Powered by Shopify” message should be gone.
If you’re satisfied with the result, it’s time to publish the new theme so your visitors can also see the changes.
- Go to the Themes menu from the sidebar navigation once again to open your Theme Library and find the Copy of your theme.
- Hit the Publish button, then confirm it in the modal window and that’s it.
From now on, anyone who accesses your online store will see the footer without the Powered by Shopify link at the bottom.
Summary:
Log into your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, and select Themes. Click on Actions, then Edit Code. Look for the footer.liquid
under the Sections folder. In this file, you’ll find the line of code containing “Powered by Shopify.”
Simply delete this section of code, then click Save in the top right corner. This will remove the branding from your store footer entirely.

What does ‘Powered by Shopify’ mean?
The “Powered by Shopify” text is part of the default theme that comes with most new Shopify stores. It appears in the footer section of your Shopify store, letting visitors know that your site is built on the Shopify platform.
While it’s a nice nod to the service you’re using, some store owners prefer to remove it for a more customized, brand-focused look. Fortunately, Shopify makes it easy to remove or replace this text in your store footer if you want to keep your store’s branding front and center.
Why does Shopify add it to the default theme content?
This footer text lets visitors know which eCommerce service powers your site. It’s a common practice for website builders to include their branding, especially with default themes.
For Shopify, it’s a simple marketing strategy that spreads awareness as more eCommerce stores launch and grow. However, while it benefits Shopify, not all owners of Shopify stores want this branding visible.
The good news is that Shopify allows you to do just that with a few simple steps.
Why remove Powered by Shopify from your online store footer?
Removing the “Powered by Shopify” text from your store’s footer can allow you to build your own brand with a more professional, customized look. While the default branding isn’t harmful, it can make your store feel less unique, especially if you’re working to build an independent brand.
When visitors see the Shopify label, they instantly know you’re using a popular platform, which may not always align with the premium or distinct image you want to project.
If you remove “Powered by Shopify,” you can keep the focus entirely on your products and your brand.
How to change Powered by Shopify to something else?
If you’d prefer to replace the “Powered by Shopify” text with something more relevant to your brand rather than removing it completely, you can easily change the link to your own. This requires a simple edit to your theme’s code.
Start by going to your Shopify admin, then head to Online Store > Themes > Actions > EditCode. In the footer.liquid
file, locate the section containing the “Powered by Shopify” text. Consult the How to Remove Powered by Shopify guide for more details.
Instead of deleting it, replace the Shopify URL with your own website or a custom text, like a link to your “About Us” page.
Once you’ve updated the link and saved the changes, your store footer will now reflect your unique branding.
What to put in your Shopify footer after you remove Powered by Shopify?
Once you’ve removed the “Powered by Shopify” text, you have the opportunity to personalize your footer with content that better reflects your brand. Consider adding elements that reinforce your brand identity or make navigation easier for customers.
Here are some ideas for what to include after removing “Powered by Shopify”:
✔️ Custom Tagline or Slogan
After removing “Powered by Shopify,” consider adding a custom tagline or slogan that aligns with your brand’s identity. This space is ideal for sharing a short, memorable text that resonates with your audience. Just make sure to keep it concise and relevant to your brand.
✔️ Quick Links to Popular Pages
Your footer can also serve as a navigation hub for important links. Adding quick links to key pages such as FAQs, Contact Us, Shipping Info, or even a Store Locator helps visitors find what they need without scrolling through your entire site.
✔️ Social Media Icons
You can also add social media icons in your footer to keep visitors engaged with your brand after they leave your site. Link to your social media accounts like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest to encourage visitors to follow your brand for updates, promotions, or behind-the-scenes content.
✔️ Newsletter Signup
Your footer is a prime spot to include a newsletter signup form. A simple form inviting customers to join your mailing list can be an effective way to grow your audience. Visitors who may not be ready to make a purchase might sign up for future deals, updates, or exclusive offers.
✔️ Trust Badges or Security Certifications
Adding trust badges or security certifications, such as SSL certificates or verified payment icons, reassures shoppers that their personal information is safe. This simple addition helps reduce hesitation and gives eCommerce stores in general a more professional, trustworthy feel.
✔️ Store Policies
You can also include your Privacy Policy, Return Policy, and Terms of Service in the footer. These links show that your business operates transparently and gives customers easy access to important information. Clear, accessible policies can also help resolve customer questions or concerns without them needing to reach out for support.
✔️ Copyright Information
Adding copyright information to your shop footer looks professional and protects your content. It’s a small detail that reinforces your store’s legitimacy while signaling that your brand takes intellectual property seriously. Including the current year and your business name is usually enough to keep this section simple and effective.
