The 6 Best Practices of Mobile App UI Design

1. Design for one hand ✔️

Most smartphone users prefer using their devices with one hand, but larger screens can make this tricky. To make your app easier to use, place key buttons within reach of the thumb, while you focus on the lower half of the screen. In addition, use large, tappable buttons, and also add quick-scroll options for content-heavy pages.

2. Don’t go overboard with the gesture UI ✔️

Swiping, pinching, or tapping make navigation more natural, but overcomplicating things can overwhelm users. This is why, consider sticking to simple and familiar gestures people already know and test gestures with real users to confirm they work as expected.

3. Make the onboarding better ✔️

The first few moments in your app matter. If onboarding feels clunky or tedious, users might leave. To make onboarding smooth, only ask for essential details during sign-up and keep onboarding short—no endless slides or pages.
Also, make sure your users can explore the app without signing up (e.g., browsing products on an eCommerce app) while you give them visual guides to help users get started quickly.

4. Keep design consistent ✔️

Consistency in app design means keeping the layout, buttons, and navigation uniform across all screens. To do so, follow platform-specific guidelines (iOS Human Interface Guidelines for Apple, Material Design for Android) and use familiar patterns—like a big “Add to Cart” button at the bottom of eCommerce apps.

5. Use white space ✔️

Create some breathing room in your app so users will be able to focus on the important parts, like buttons or calls to action while keeping the interface organized and easy on the eyes.

6. Balance signal and noise ✔️

Every part of your app’s design competes for attention, so it’s important to minimize clutter. A high signal-to-noise ratio means keeping shapes simple and text easy to read, limiting your color palette, using clean backgrounds and avoiding unnecessary animations or ads.
